Marriage Equality and Financial Aid

Most of NMB’s branches are based in universities.  As students, we often think of marriage equality as an issue affecting aspects of our lives unrelated to education.  But it is important to note that indeed, marriage equality affects something as real and pivotal to higher education access as the financial aid system. LGBT people are already at a disadvantage financially for education, being three times as likely to have an income below $10,000, facing employment discrimination without…

Tennessee 'Don't Say Gay' Bill Advances In State Senate

A bill that would prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in the classroom before the ninth grade has advanced in Tennessee's Senate.

Sponsored by state Sen. Stacey Campfield (R), who unsuccessfully pushed the same measure for six years while serving in the House, the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill would make it illegal for educators to discuss any sexual behavior apart from heterosexuality with students in kindergarten up through the eighth grade.

Obama's DOMA Pronouncement

We at National Marriage Boycott are excited that President Obama has made his first symbolic step towards a disavowal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  Obviously, our boycott is contingent on the existence of DOMA, and we would like to see this economically and socially unjust legislation repealed as soon as possible.  Obama’s actions last week, however, do not constitute death for DOMA.  Instead, he has simply ordered the Department of Justice to stop upholding the…

Civil Unions for Straight Couples

Throughout my college years, I worked with the campus sexual violence prevention organization and the sexuality and gender activists. It was the connections I made through those organizations that brought me to National Marriage Boycott. My main interests in school were sexual violence prevention and sexuality education.

One thing I did not study in depth and wish I had is the difference between civil unions and marriage. I know it varies by state and it is constantly…

College Students Continue To Fight Return of ROTC Due to Transgender Discrimination

Even with Repeal of” Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, Transgender Individuals are still barred from Military Service

Several student organizations at Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia have launched a new campaign against the return of ROTC to college campuses in light of the repeal of DADT due to their policy of discrimination towards transgender service members. The National Marriage Boycott, the largest…

Coming Out Resources

As a youth LGBT organization, we definitely get our share of questions about coming out.  We realize that the decision to come out (or not) is highly individual and a number of factors (including family acceptance, economic resources, community support, etc) are involved.  The common feature of all these decisions is that they require some degree of communication--someone to talk to, in other words.  That "someone" can be online or in person or on the phone or in a book, but it always helps…

In The Closet

So I have known I was gay at the age of 8 years old. When I found myself falling in love with one of the girls on my softball team (Delilah Gentry who i come to find out years later she is gay also). I am still in the closet. Why? Is what my friends often ask me. Well I am a Hispanic and my culture is not really ok with gay. Not to mention that I am also Catholic, and oh on top of that I live in a small town where being openly gay is not ok ether. I find my self wondering what would my life be… Continue

LGBT Youth Suicide

Preventing queer youth suicide is not the work of a few

organizations. It should be the part of all our missions. The

statistics are alarming for all queer youth (LGBT youth are more

than four times as likely to commit suicide than their straight

peers), and when one considers that queer youth of color and

transgender students are even more likely to be targeted, the

disparities become increasingly apparent. Youth of color are

anywhere from 20-40% more… Continue

Generation No H8

gen*er*a*tion no H8noun – new activists who feel a deep, emotional connection to Prop 8, and are now working towards full federal equality. Judge Walker’s decision was an especially meaningful victory for Generation No H8.

Not many people know this, but I came out shortly after Proposition 8 passed in November of 2008. That makes it…
