We won't- until we all can.
The Respect for Marriage Act is a proposed bill that would repeal part of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). If this new act passes, the federal government will no longer define marriage as between a man and a woman, but instead by whether or not a marriage is valid in the state it was sanctioned.
Right now, the Respect for Marriage Act is sitting in a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Before this act can move from the subcommittee into a hearing or even a vote, co-sponsors sign onto the bill. Currently there are 120 co-sponsors, but in order to show that the bill would not be voted down, a majority, or 218 co-sponsors need to sign onto the bill.
